Description
This 3-day course will introduce you to the foundations of Thai bodywork in a relaxed learning environment with two instructors. Designed for beginners of Thai massage and therapists interested in learning Eastern modalities of massage. You will practice effective hands-on techniques while learning a new way of working, off the table and onto a mat on the floor. You will learn about the history of Thai massage and its cultural aspects, traditional theory, and the importance of proper body mechanics and self-care. By the end of this course, you will be able to confidently practice a unique, 1-hour or longer Thai massage session.
Thai massage is so much more than just stretching. It’s a healing art that incorporates many aspects of massage, including acupressure, broad pressure, sustained pressure, holding, rocking, plucking, energy work, joint mobilization, and more. Our techniques will teach you how to utilize your hands, fingers, thumbs, forearms, elbows, knees, feet, toes, heels, and occasionally your entire body to apply pressure and gain leverage. We will practice working with the body in supine, prone, seated, and side-lying positions with a focus on proper body mechanics to ensure you can build sustainable practice. Along with techniques, we’ll explore verbal and non-verbal communication, making smooth transitions, and using stillness, intention, and intuition in your work. We’ll introduce the Thai energetic system, Thai yoga for self-care, acupressure points, and Thai abdominal massage. This course will help you lay a solid foundation to build your Thai bodywork skills upon.
We will practice in the traditional style, with the client fully clothed, on a mat on the floor. You must be able to be comfortable kneeling to attend this course. Each student will receive a detailed handbook illustrating instructions for the various techniques we practice. We will provide mats, sheets, and some props. Please bring two pillows to use during class and wear comfortable clothing that you can move and stretch in, like workout or yoga attire.
