Description
Iliotibial Band (IT Band) Syndrome is a common overuse condition affecting runners, cyclists, and other physically active individuals. Often associated with lateral knee pain, IT Band Syndrome can involve complex relationships between muscular tension, movement patterns, biomechanics, and repetitive stress.
This 4-hour, hands-on continuing education workshop explores the anatomy, function, and biomechanics of the iliotibial band and its relationship to the hip, thigh, and knee. Participants will learn to identify common contributing factors to IT Band Syndrome and develop effective, targeted sports massage strategies to address associated soft tissue restrictions and muscular imbalances.
Through guided demonstrations and supervised hands-on practice, students will explore assessment techniques, myofascial approaches, and therapeutic massage applications targeting the tensor fasciae latae (TFL), gluteal muscles, quadriceps, and other structures that influence lower-extremity function.
Emphasis is placed on safe, evidence-informed treatment, appropriate pressure and positioning, and understanding why aggressive direct pressure or attempts to “release” the IT band itself may be ineffective or counterproductive.
By the end of this workshop, participants will have greater confidence in assessing clients presenting with lateral knee discomfort, adapting sports massage techniques to individual needs, and incorporating effective treatment strategies into their clinical practice.
